Galicia

On July 15 I head off to Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, Spain.

Galicia is perhaps best known as the birthplace of Franco, but is also home to a cheese called the "tetilla" (nipple): . Every web site and guidebook I consult mentions this cheese. I picture restaurants and delis crammed with them, old women crying, "You must try the nipple!"

Galicia is also one of the poorer regions in Spain. My Lonely Planet book mentions this, saying that the region is poor, "but not oppresively so, as in the south." It's an odd turn of phrase. As though poverty is like the weather.
